Substack Just Made it Easier to Convert Free Readers to Paid Subscribers
Earn More $$ With Audience-Specific Content
Substack rolled out a new feature — Audience-specific content - and it changes the game for our income. Let me show you how powerful this new feature is, how to use it to increase your revenue and be more intentional with your subscriber levels.
What is Audience-Specific Content?
Up til now we had three options when creating a Substack post:
Make it Free for everyone
Write it for Paid subscribers only
Or to put a paywall in the post to make the first part free and the rest paid. In other words, annoying the shit out of everyone.
Audience-specific content kicks this limitation to the curb.
Now, we have the option to address sections within the same post to specific readers.
This feature allows writers to insert sections inside of the same post for readers who are not subscribed, free subscribers, paid subscribers or founding subscribers. The content in that section will appear only to the group of readers selected.
How to Use Audience-Specific Content in Your Substack Posts to Get More Paid Subscribers
The easiest way to do this is to just show you. Let’s say I’m writing a post about and I want to provide different endings for each of the four audience types. Here’s what that would look like.

I’ll be tracking before and after conversion rates, but I suspect there’ll be a drastic upswing from implementing this strategy.

There is no truer line "Or to put a paywall in the post to make the first part free and the rest paid. In other words, annoying the shit out of everyone." LOL
I always hated doing this. Thanks for breaking it down in plain English, as always.
Interesting that Substack added this functionality. It is a nicer transition for readers and a smoother CTA. I don’t use paid subscriptions here at the moment, but anyone using membership plugins on their WordPress websites could apply the same logic to their blog post CTAs as well.
